With the recent drop in temperatures (besides this past week-end, of course), it’s a good time to start thinking about winterizing your home for the cold months ahead. Home winterization is often overlooked, but is an important part of maintaining your property. You will also be more comfortable this winter by doing a little prep work now in the fall.
Here are some great tips:
·Check exterior, doors and windows. If you walk by and feel a breeze, you definitely have a problem! Use weather-stripping around doors and caulk around windows. Replace any cracked or broken glass. Caulk any cracks in exterior trim and seal any exposed entry points around pipes.
·Inspect roof, gutters and downspouts. Replace missing shingles and check for roof leaks. Check attic insulation thickness to prevent heat from escaping to the roof. Clear gutters of leaves and flush downspouts to eliminate debris.
·Check furnace and fireplaces. Clean ducts and change furnace filters. Check air duct joints to be sure they are sealed. Install a programmable thermostat. Clean chimney and install screen on top to keep out small animals. Inspect fireplace damper for proper opening and closing.
·Prevent damage outdoors. Drain outdoor garden hoses and store in garage or shed for the winter. Seal driveways, wood decks and brick patios.
·Paint the exterior and trim to protect your home. The surface temperature in fall makes it a great time to paint. Properly scrape the area to relieve it of paint flakes, dirt and grease to provide a smooth, clean surface for the new coat of paint to bond effectively. A good paint job will help protect your home’s exterior from the elements. Don’t forget to caulk any gaps while you are painting.
While some of these items can easily be done yourself, consider hiring a professional before venturing up a ladder. We can check these and other winterization items for you and make sure you stay warm and cozy this winter.
As we head into the tail end of summer and start looking forward to the changing colors of the leaves as fall approaches, many of us may not have completed our summer home improvement “to do” lists.Never fear, there is still time, and fall is a great time to finish up that list and take on a few other projects you may not even had thought about.
For the Kitchen
Even if it’s not in your budget to change your counter tops, cabinetry or appliances, there are many small details you can do to make your kitchen look like it has had a major overhaul.Updating details like the light fixtures, drawer and cabinet knobs and handles, and a fresh coat of paint will brighten that area of the house we all tend to gather in.
For the Living Room
An updated ceiling fan and curtain rods can turn around an outdated living room. What about some recessed lighting strategically placed and maybe getting rid of that old, smelly carpet and putting down hard woods or tile?
For the Bathroom
Changing out the hardware, such as drawer pulls, faucet handles and shower heads, can make a big impact on your bathroom, but a small impact on your wallet.Be sure to use the same finish, such as stainless steel, aged bronze or brushed nickel, to keep the room looking cohesive.Lighting in the bathroom is extremely important – the ability to have dim lighting for those relaxing baths while also having enough light to shave and apply make-up is crucial.Adding more overall lighting can make a small bathroom seem much larger.
Moisture and bathrooms go hand-in-hand, so make sure your ventilation system is appropriate for your bathroom as mold and mildew can ruin all your renovation work. Also, new designs are quieter and more stylish, so it is a must for any bathroom remodel.
For the Outside
The two areas to focus on when thinking about exterior home improvements are new siding and updating your landscaping.Thinking about selling your home?Studies show new siding gets you close to 100% return on your investment, and that’s hiring a contractor to complete the project.
Nowadays, people view their yards as an extension of their home, and putting in a deck or some nice hardscapes, to complement your yard, including a fire pit area, will give you hours of enjoyment, even in the cool evenings.
If any of these ideas sparked an interest in you, but you just don’t think you will have time to tackle them before winter hits, Creed Improvements would love a chance to earn your business and get that “to do” list completely done for you.
You might recall when I saw these pictures first thing that came into my mind was “You might need CREED!” paying homage to the, “you might be a redneck” jokes of course. Well you be the judge!
Missed it by a foot?? Why not use electrical boxes?? Maybe they had them left over from the first post?? NOT!!!
I hope your laughing because we were when we saw this! Believe it or not this sorta stuff really happens.
This is definitely how NOT to do this! If you see this in your house, a friend’s house or anyone you love’s house PLEASE tell them “You Might Need CREED!” This has to be an entry into the Darwin awards for home improvement repairs. I hope you get a laugh out of these and please share these posts with your friends.
On the serious side this type of repair quality can cause the growth of mold which can affect your health. Doing this job right might have cost another $50 in materials and maybe a few extra hours of labor but what is your life worth? If you don’t call us please call someone.
Spring is almost here and I’m sure you are busy planning your spring projects. If we can help with your repairs, remodeling projects inside or outside, or your insurance restoration needs please give us a call at (317) 626-1177
