We at CREED Improvements want you and your family to be safe this storm season so we prepared some truth to dispel some myths about tornadoes for you.  Indiana is in the path of “Tornado Alley”, a swath of states extending from the Southeast to the Plains.  Although tornadoes can strike any time of year, most tornadoes form during the spring months between March and June.

Historically, the most destructive tornadoes strike in March and April. June holds the record for the most tornadoes in Indiana on any given day: 37, and for the most in a single month: 44. Both records were set in 1990, which is also the year for the most tornadoes in the state: 49. Indiana averages 20 Tornadoes a year.

Tornadoes often form in the southwest portion of thunderstorms- next to the part of the storm where heavy rain or hail is falling. If you observe large hail, you are under the most intense part of the storm. Take Cover!

We at CREED Improvements want help dispel common myths about tornadoes.

Tornado Myths

MYTH:“Tornadoes never strike big cities”
TRUTH:In the past several years, tornadoes have roared through several major cities including Miami; Nashville Tenn; and Fort Worth Texas. Despite folklore, no city or town has “Natural Protection” from a tornado.

MYTH:“Go to the Southwest Corner of your Basement”
TRUTH:Some studies suggest this might actually be the most dangerous place in your basement. If a tornado hits from the southwest, it could push debris into that area. No matter where you go, try to hide under a mattress or sturdy piece of furniture to maximize protection.

MYTH:“Opening windows will equalize air pressure and prevent an explosion”
TRUTH: Most experts agree that tornado-force winds will take care of opening the windows for you. Forget this old advice. Take cover immediately!

MYTH:Lakes, rivers, and mountains protect areas from tornadoes.
TRUTH:No place is safe from tornadoes. A tornado near Yellowstone National Park left a path of destruction up and down a 10,000 foot mountain.

MYTH:A tornado causes buildings to “explode” as the tornado passes overhead.
TRUTH:Violent winds and debris slamming into buildings cause most structural damage.

MYTH:Highway overpasses provide shelter from tornadoes
TRUTH:Take shelter in a sturdy reinforced building if at all possible. The funneling of wind through an overpass will actually increase the wind speed. Ditches, and culverts may provide limited protection from a tornado, but your risk will be greatly reduced by moving inside a strong building.

CREEDism: Things can always be replaced but your loved ones can’t, so be prepared and stay safe out there!

As the temperature continues to drop, there are plenty of home improvement projects you can perform to make your home more attractive and winter-ready as you prepare for those inevitable holiday visitors. It’s important as you create your list of wintertime projects to have realistic goals for how much you can accomplish. Failure to adequately plan can lead you to paying contractors for emergency trips and overtime rates.

Flooring

Winter is the perfect time to upgrade your home’s flooring. If you have the skills, it may be something you could do yourself as winter tends to be a great time for saving money on flooring projects. Just make sure you give yourself enough time – or hire a professional to make sure it’s done in a timely manner and before the holiday visits begin.

Windows

An easy and inexpensive way to improve the look of your home this winter is to upgrade your window treatments by shopping around for fashionable blinds, curtains and shades. You should find it easy to replace your older window treatments, and it can make a noticeable difference in a short amount of time.

Lighting

If some of your lights look like they’re from the ‘70s, it’s time for a new look. Shopping around at several home improvement stores should give you dozens of ideas for how to upgrade your lighting with contemporary fixtures that better match your home’s decor.

Garage

Another area of your home that you can upgrade in a hurry is your garage. If your garage is disorganized, spend a few hours cleaning and inventorying what you have. Make the most of your space by buying hooks to hang up items like a stroller, a plastic swimming pool, or gardening tools.

Organizing/thinking ahead

Whether it’s your closets, kitchen or bathrooms, there is some part of your home that could be better organized. Take advantage of all the hours you spend indoors this season to organize those spaces.

Take some time before the hustle and bustle of the holiday season to make a home improvement winter to-do list, and let us help you accomplish it all before the holidays.

You might recall when I saw these pictures first thing that came into my mind was “You might need CREED!” paying homage to the, “you might be a redneck” jokes of course.  Well you be the judge!

Missed it by a foot?? Why not use electrical boxes?? Maybe they had them left over from the first post?? NOT!!!

Missed it by a foot?? Why not use electrical boxes?? Maybe they had them left over from the first post?? NOT!!!

I hope your laughing because we were when we saw this!  Believe it or not this sorta stuff really happens.

This is definitely how NOT to do this!  If you see this in your house, a friend’s house or anyone you love’s house PLEASE tell them “You Might Need CREED!”  This has to be an entry into the Darwin awards for home improvement repairs.   I hope you get a laugh out of these and please share these posts with your friends.

On the serious side this type of repair quality can cause the growth of mold which can affect your health.  Doing this job right might have cost another $50 in materials and maybe a few extra hours of labor but what is your life worth?  If you don’t call us please call someone.

Spring is almost here and I’m sure you are busy planning your spring projects.  If we can help with your repairs, remodeling projects inside or outside, or your insurance restoration needs please give us a call at (317) 626-1177
